The encampment should stay

Categories: Discussion

But, it is time for the Oakland City Council to voluntarily leave. Downtown shootings have occurred long before Occupy Oakland. So, it seems that they are more a consequence of the Oakland City Council than the encampment.
Just how stupid do you have to be to think that turning off lights make things safer. The encampment has been there a month with no incidents, other than riots by riot police. Then after one day with the lights turned off and the City Council causes one death.

Tactics need to evolve. Encampments will not bring change. General strikes every week or month combined with hacktivism and direct action by small groups on the corruption mechanisms (i.e. Koch lobbying) are the way to go.

Wow, you are in serious denial. While I believe turning the lights off made the situation more dangerous, and said so here, it was still daylight when this shooting took place. Occupy Oakland announced a block party to celebrate 1 month of the camp. We did not provide enough security. That is what I saw, and I was down there at the time of the shooting.

But it’s definitely true that Occupy Oakland is not the source of this violence. Neither is the Oakland City Council. That’s just incendiary rhetoric you are throwing around. The gun violence has been here for decades. It is the product of a sick culture that glorifies the individual’s right to do anything he wants, that puts up gun-toting macho male role models for the youth on TV and movies every single day. However, I believe if Occupy Oakland had done more to distance ourselves from all violence, we would currently be standing on stronger ground to denounce its connection with us.
